Equestrian Trail Etiquette

This list contains many of the behaviors that CCSC has found to be helpful in ensuring that riderst and other trail users are safe as well as enjoy the trail ride.

  • Before you increase your speed, alert the riders around you. The rider next to you could be daydreaming; his horse could be daydreaming; his horse could be a youngster who might be very excited if your horse suddenly increases speed. Make sure everyone around you is aware that you are about to trot or canter off.
  • Don't pass a group at high speed. This applies to groups who are coming towards you, and those who are going the same way you are.
  • Slow down around sharp corners, especially where trees may block the view. Move to the right side of the road if possible.
  • Don't make loud noises on the trail.
  • Don't spoil the view by leaving empty cans and other trash along the trail.
  • If your horse kicks, put a red ribbon on its tail.
  • CCSC always leaves gates as they found them. Sometimes trail areas double as cow pastures.
  • CCSC rides do not cross private property without permission. Even if someone on the ride knows the owner, unless we have permission, we do not ride on private property.
  • Take care of your horse after the ride
