Invitation to Trail Construction
at Garland Mountain Horse Trails
June 14th, 2008

The Cherokee County Saddle Club (CCSC), in cooperation with the Cherokee Recreation & Parks Agency (CRPA), is developing a scenic 13-mile horse and hiker trail system in northwest June 14th, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m. Please come out and help develop this exciting trail opportunity. We will be clearing brush and deadfall on the trail corridor, and also building a narrow tread path. Volunteers are asked to pre-register with Cindy Young at Cdingodog1@aol.com or (770) 517-9550.

Everyone should bring work gloves and wear long pants. Please bring plenty of drinking water and your lunch. We will take a half-hour break around noon to rest and enjoy lunch. If you have loppers (not hand clippers) please bring them. We have a special need for chainsaws and experienced chainsaw operators. Sawyers do not have to be federally certified but MUST have and wear proper safety equipment. Sawyers need chainsaws, safety chaps, ear and eye protection, leather or sturdy shoes/boots (not tennis shoes), hard hats, and their fuel and oil supply. The team can provide hard hats but sawyers must wear safety chaps to use a chainsaw. We will also need some strong persons to work with the sawyers, moving cut tree parts.

We will meet on the roadside near the location of the future parking lot to be built by the County. Parking spots are available on both sides of the road, but carpooling is recommended. Please arrive early so that you are ready to work at 10:00. Here are the directions:

Going West on GA-140:
• Travel on GA-140 west from Waleska. Go 3.6 miles west from the 4-way stop in Waleska to Garland Mtn Trail (or Road) on your right side.
• Go 1.2 miles on Garland Mountain Trail (this is a gravel road).
• Turn left onto Garland Mountain Way, an asphalt road, and travel 0.8 miles to the site of the future trailhead parking lot. Park on the berm beside the road.

Going East on GA-140:
• From the intersection of US-411 and GA-140, travel 7.4 miles east on GA-140 toward Waleska. At this point you will see the Garland Mountain Trail (Road) on your left.
• Turn onto Garland Mountain Trail and follow the directions above.
