Saturday, November 21, 2009 is the big day for Garland Mountain Horse and Hike Trails in Waleska, GA. The Trails will open with festivities starting at noon at the parking lot on Garland Mountain Way and you are invited to for the Ribbon Cutting and to ride out for the Opening of the Trails! Starting at Noon Trails End Concessions will offer grilled hot dog and hamburger plates for $5, Waleska Fire and Rescue will have their fire truck, ambulance and EMT Gator for kids of all ages to explore, there will be saddle club and horse related booths and more. At 2PM, mounted on horses, the Cherokee County dignitaries will cut the blue ribbon and ride out on Phase 1 of the Trails which encompasses 6.5 miles. The Trails, when finished, will offer 13.5 miles of environmentally friendly, interconnecting loop trails traversing hardwoods, streams and mountain scenery. This new Trail system, the first of its kind in the County, is a partnership of a volunteer organization, the Cherokee County Saddle Club, and the Cherokee County government to provide a green space for horseback riding and hiking. The Trails have been designed and constructed with 100% volunteer labor and some donated machinery. The Cherokee County Saddle Club is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to promoting trail riding through member trail rides, training, education, fellowship and the development of horse trail systems. Other clubs have joined in to give their time and hard work including Chattahoochee Trail Horse Association, Saddle-Up Cobb, Bent Tree Saddle Club, Back Country Horsemen of North Georgia and Georgia Endurance Riders Association. Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency provided the parking lot for vehicles and horse trailers, restroom, information kiosk and ADA approved mounting block through a $75,000 Recreational Trails Program grant through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The green space property was purchased in 2005 and is an investment in our preservation of nature as it can never be developed for commercial or residential use and can only be used for passive recreation such hiking, horse back riding, biking, and picnicking. No motorized vehicles, ball fields or non-passive activities are allowed.
The Trails are approximately 6 miles from the center of Waleska, GA.
